Presenting StoryMaker: Telling and sharing stories at your fingertips

Revolutionary riots in Egypt, horrific events in Syria, the stuffing of ballot boxes in Russia, who would know about it if it weren't for photos and videos captured by citizens with smartphones. Quit often mainstream media will pick up on the detailed and sometimes graphic videos of important events, that otherwise would not be mentioned in the news.

Smartphones are increasingly becoming the best and most accessible devices to share content with and to stay connected to the world. The quality of much content produced with mobile phones is mostly poor, but that often doesn't have much to do with the phone's capabilities. With the new StoryMaker app journalists and activists can safely produce and share better stories on their phones. The app not only teaches users to capture images of a certain event, but also to tell a story behind it from several angles.

At the Freedom Online Conference in Tunis Free Press Unlimited´s Niels ten Oever will present the ins and outs of StoryMaker.

About StoryMaker, a collaborative process

StoryMaker was developed through close collaboration between Free Press Unlimited, The Guardian Project and Small World News. The app is created as an open source tool to ensure security, quality, freedom and customization. StoryMaker lessons are licensed under Creative Commons and can be adapted by users to their context. StoryMaker users are encouraged to provide feedback and report bugs or issues they have while using the app through the feedback form icon in the app. To learn more about the app and to join the community visit StoryMaker.cc.
